Concrete Rebar Location

Determining the size and spacing of reinforcing steel (rebar) in reinforced concrete can be critical to an investigation. The problem typically is that most methods of rebar location are only effective to about a 4 in. depth. After that, the equipment is not sensitive enough to determine the rebar size and location. N-J employs multiple methods to detect reinforcing including ground penetrating radar and resistivity. In special cases, N-J has used specialized X-ray equipment to assess the concrete. However, X-ray is normally avoided because the structure must be cleared of all people for a significant distance because it is impossible to provide shielding of the X-ray source.
